Information we collect

Thrift File is a static website. There are no user accounts, no registration, no comments and no newsletter storing your details. There is no database of visitors on this site.

The information that reaches us is limited to what your browser and our hosting and analytics providers send automatically:

  • The page you requested and the time you requested it.
  • An approximate location derived from your IP address, at city or region level.
  • The page you arrived from, if there was one.
  • Your browser type, operating system and screen size.

This is used in aggregate, to see which guides are read and which are not. It is not used to build a profile of you as an individual.

Cookies

This site sets cookies for two purposes.

Analytics cookies count how many people read each guide and where they arrive from. They record aggregate numbers, not individuals.

Advertising cookies are set by third-party advertising networks. They may be used to show advertising based on pages you have visited on this and other sites.

Advertising

This site displays advertising, which is how the writing is paid for. Third-party vendors use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

You can opt out of personalised advertising in your Google Ads settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies for personalised advertising through the industry opt-out pages operated for that purpose. Which of those options apply depends on where you live and which advertising partners are running.

Affiliate links work by placing a tracking identifier in the link. The retailer can see that a visit came from this site. We do not receive your name, your address, your payment details, or any information about what else you bought or returned.

You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings, and you can use a browser or extension that blocks advertising and tracking scripts. Blocking those cookies does not prevent you from reading any part of this site; every guide is fully readable without them.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted on this page with a new date. Material changes will be described in plain language rather than slipped in quietly.
