A carry-on wardrobe that shops as it goes

Pack for the trip you have booked, leave a third of the case empty, and choose pieces that survive a market and a sink wash. Every purchase you make then has somewhere to live on the way home.

Pack to about two thirds of the case and choose pieces that dry overnight. That single rule solves the two problems a shopping trip creates: where the new things go, and what you wear while the old things dry. Everything below is arranged around leaving room rather than filling it.

Cabin allowances set the math before you pack a thing. Delta, for example, allows one carry-on plus one personal item, with the carry-on capped at 22 by 14 by 9 inches, or 45 linear inches. Many international carriers also cap cabin weight, often somewhere around 15 to 22 pounds, and some budget airlines allow only a small under-seat bag for free. Weigh a packed case at home with a luggage scale rather than at the gate.

Choose fiber, not style

On a trip where you will wash in a sink, the fiber decides how much you pack. Fine merino wool holds a few wears between washes because the fiber absorbs and releases odor compounds, and it dries in four to six hours. Polyester dries in two to three. Cotton takes eight to twelve hours and holds water, which makes it the worst choice for a trip with laundry in it, however much you like the shirt.

The pieces that earn a place

  • Two bottoms, no more — One pair of trousers in a wool blend and one skirt or second pair cut for the weather. Trousers take the longest to dry and are the hardest thing to buy on the road, so pack one and wear one.
  • Three tops in wool or a wool blend — Fine-gauge merino travels better than anything else at the same weight. Three tops plus one layer covers two weeks of days if you rotate and air them overnight.
  • One smart piece — A dress, a blazer or a dark shirt that works for a restaurant. Pick one that survives a fold, because the alternative is carrying a garment bag for an evening you may not have.
  • Shoes worn, one spare — Shoes are the heaviest thing in any case, often a pound and a half to two pounds a pair. Wear the bulky pair on the plane and pack a flat pair that will not object to being squashed.

Shopping as you go, without ruining the math

  1. 1

Buy the gap, not the treat

A hat, a scarf, a belt or a plain tee is worth buying abroad because it fills a hole and gets used the same week. A structured jacket bought on day two still has to be carried for two weeks.

  2. 2

    Avoid shoes and denim

Both are heavy, both need breaking in, and both are usually cheaper at home once you count the space they take. Buy them only if the pair you are wearing has failed.

  3. 3

    Mail the heavy things early

A courier or post office on day three is calmer than a panic at the airport, and it stops a rug or a couple of pounds of knitwear from deciding the shape of your trip.

  4. 4

Keep a photograph of the packed case

One photo of the open case on day one is your inventory if a bag goes missing and your checklist on the way home. It also settles arguments about how much room you had.

Six things that make a carry-on work harder

Every item here earns its space by being lighter, quicker to dry or useful on the way home. Prices are shown only where we confirmed them on the brand or retailer page in Oct 2026.

Merino socks are the one place where the fiber upgrade pays for itself in a week. Four pairs, washed in a sink, can cover two weeks in very little space; Woolmark notes merino doesn't need washing often.

Frequently asked

How many outfits should a two-week trip carry?
Six tops, two bottoms, one layer and one smart piece, worn in rotation, is a comfortable two weeks if you wash once. That fills roughly half a standard carry-on, which leaves the rest for what you bring home. The instinct to pack fourteen of anything is worth resisting, because underwear and socks are the only categories where a full two weeks is genuinely easier.
Is a hard case or a soft bag better for shopping?
A soft case with a compression cube and a packable tote as the personal item, because a hard shell does not expand and does not squash. If you plan to buy textiles, a soft duffel as the second item is worth its weight: it compresses flat on the way out and carries a couple of pounds of cloth on the way back.
What should I buy abroad rather than pack?
Things that fit the local weather and would be expensive at home: a straw hat in a hot country, a wool scarf in a cold one, a plain tee in a cheap cotton market. All of them get used during the trip, which is the test. Anything you will only wear at home has to justify the space it takes for the whole journey.
How do I stop one purchase becoming a second bag?
Buy on the way out, not the way back, and post anything heavy early. A parcel sent on day three costs the same as one sent on the last day and removes the risk that a single find forces you into a checked bag fee that costs more than the item did.
