Some pouch and pod refills save real money per milliliter. Others save a few dollars on the shelf and nothing once you check the fill. A refillable case with a cartridge can save nothing at all. What matters most isn't the material; it's whether the brand actually removed the packaging or just moved it.
The check is one division. Take the full-size price and divide by its volume, do the same for the refill, and compare the two per 100ml. Per unit tells you nothing, because the two containers often don't hold the same amount. Prices move, so do this on the day, on the brand's own page.
Which formats actually pay
Refill formats, ranked by what they actually save
| Format | Saving per 100ml | Packaging avoided | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pouch or pod refill | Varies; check per 100ml | Most of the jar, lid and carton | A smaller fill size than the original cancels part of the discount |
| In-store refill station | Varies by shop | The whole container, every time | Only worth it if the shop is on your normal route |
| Concentrate or powder | More per millilitre, less per use | Most of the water and the shipping weight | You are buying water locally. Compare cost per use |
| Solid bar | More per gram, even per wash | Effectively all of it | A bar is not a cheaper shampoo by weight. It wins on plastic and shelf life |
| Case with a cartridge | Often zero, sometimes negative | Depends entirely on the refill | The format where a refill usually costs more per gram |

Where the refill costs more
Refillable deodorant is the format to check hardest. Refills are often priced at or above a plain disposable stick per gram, and the case is a separate purchase. The plastic saving can be real; so can the extra cost. Do the per-gram sum before you sign up.
Concentrates need a different calculation. A powder you mix yourself can work out far cheaper per use than a ready-made serum, and it ships at a fraction of the weight. A pinch in water is a different product from a stabilized serum, though, so compare cost per use and accept that you're buying a different thing.

Best savingKiehl's
Ultra Facial Cream, refill pod
The pod is shaped for the original jar, so the first purchase is the expensive one. Check the pod's volume against the jar before you assume a saving.

Ren Clean Skincare
Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream, refill
Fragrance-free and aimed at reactive skin. Check the refill price per milliliter against the jar on the day; a saving under about 15 percent is barely worth the effort.

L'Occitane
Shea Butter Hand Cream, refill
The refill is a pouch, which saves the most plastic for the least fuss. Do the per-milliliter sum, since pouch and tube sizes don't always match.

Fenty Skin
Hydra Vizor Mineral SPF 30, refill
A rare sunscreen that refills: Fenty lists the full size at $45, the refill at $40 and the empty refillable case at $5 (fentybeauty.com, Oct 2026). That's about 11 percent off, assuming the fill is the same.

Compare the refillHow to check a refill claim in thirty seconds
- 1
Divide both prices by volume
Each price divided by its millilitres, multiplied by a hundred. If the refill is not at least 15 percent lower per hundred millilitres, the claim is decoration.
- 2
Check the fill weight, not the pack size
A refill holding 40ml where the original held 50ml is a price rise in a pouch. Both weights are printed, usually in small type.
- 3
Confirm it is the same formula
Reformulations happen quietly, and a refill of a new formula is a new product. Compare the ingredient list against the jar you already own.
- 4
Count the refills the case costs
Case price divided by saving per refill gives the number needed before the system pays for itself. If the answer is three or more, most people never get there.
- 5
Look at what the case is made of
A glued case of mixed plastic often can't be recycled curbside, so the refill has moved the waste rather than reduced it. Metal cases are the ones worth keeping.

What a refill does not fix
A refill reduces packaging per unit. It does not reduce how much you buy, and it does not make a product you would not otherwise finish worth owning. A refill habit built on an abandoned jar is a case in a drawer with better intentions.
The lowest-waste format is still the one with no case at all: a solid bar, a tin, or a big tub of the plainest version of the ingredient you need. Against that, a refillable case has to earn its place on convenience, which it often can.
