Solid shampoo bars: what they really cost per wash

A bar isn't automatically cheaper than a bottle. Some barely are once you divide by the number of washes. What a bar reliably saves is weight and plastic, and it helps to know that before you switch.

Divide what a bar costs by the washes it gives, and you land within a few cents of a mid-priced liquid shampoo. The savings are somewhere else. A bar weighs roughly a third of the same number of washes in a bottle, and it comes wrapped in paper, not plastic.

Liquid shampoo is mostly water. Taking the water out is what makes a bar possible, and it's also why the per-wash math is closer than the shelf price suggests. Take one real example: Ethique lists its 110g Heali Kiwi bar at about 80 uses, and it usually sells for $14 to $18 (ethique.com, Amazon and Thrive Market, Oct 2026). That's roughly 18 to 23 cents a wash. A typical $10, 400ml bottle at 6ml a wash gives about 65 washes at around 15 cents. The bottle can still win on cost; the bar wins on weight and plastic.

Syndet bars and soap bars are different animals

A true soap bar is saponified fat and sits well on the alkaline side. That matters because the hair fiber itself has a pH of about 3.67, and a 2014 review in the International Journal of Trichology found that shampoos above pH 5.5 can raise friction between fibers, which means more frizz, tangling and breakage. In hard water, soap also forms calcium and magnesium salts that cling to the hair and feel waxy. A syndet bar is built on synthetic surfactants, usually sodium cocoyl isethionate, and behaves much more like a liquid shampoo.

Two more formats worth comparing

A concentrate you dilute at home, in a bottle you already own, beats both bar and bottle at about 13 cents a wash, and it ships at a fraction of the weight. A refill pouch sits in between: cheaper per milliliter than the original bottle and much lighter, but still plastic that most curbside programs won't take.

Bar sizes vary a lot, and product pages don't always make that obvious. Divide price by weight before you compare. The Ethique bar works out to roughly 13 to 16 cents a gram at $14 to $18 for 110g, which gives you a benchmark.

Making a bar last

  1. 1

Keep it out of the water stream

Rub the bar over wet hair, or work up a lather in your hands out of the spray. A bar parked under a running shower loses more to the drain than it ever gives your hair.

  2. 2

Store it dry, on something slatted

A draining dish or a hanging soap bag lets air reach every side. A bar in a closed tin stays mushy, and a bar in a puddle can lose a third of itself without being used once.

  3. 3

    Cut it in half

Use one half and keep the other dry in a cabinet. Two small pieces dissolve more slowly than one big one.

  4. 4

Give it a few washes before you judge

Bars lather less than bottled shampoo. That's a formula difference, not a sign it isn't working.

Frequently asked

Are shampoo bars better for the environment?
On packaging and shipping weight, almost always, and by a lot: no bottle, no pump, no water. On the washing itself, no. A bar changes the plastic and the transport. Give up on it after two uses and you've done worse than finishing the bottle you already had.
Why does my hair feel waxy after switching?
Usually a true soap bar meeting hard water, which leaves calcium and magnesium salts on the fiber. It can also be leftover silicone from the previous shampoo taking a wash or two to come off. If the first ingredient is sodium olivate or sodium cocoate, that is your answer.
Do bars work on color-treated hair?
A mild syndet bar is fine, and generally gentler than a clarifying shampoo. What matters more is how often you wash and how hot the water is, since color loss comes from the cuticle being open rather than from the surfactant. Avoid soap-based bars, which raise the cuticle more.
How long does a bar really last?
Ethique puts its full-size 110g bar at about 80 uses. Washing every other day, that's around five months. Stored badly, in a wet tin or under the shower, the same bar can vanish in half the time, and that's melting, not use.
